John 8 – Amazing Stories About Jesus

🌅 Jesus Teaches at the Temple

Early in the morning, Jesus went to the big, beautiful temple where people came to pray and learn about God. When the sun came up, lots of people saw Him there and gathered around to hear Him teach amazing things about God’s love.

⚖️ A Woman in Big Trouble

While Jesus was teaching, some angry religious leadersᵃ came marching up with a woman who had done something very wrong. They pushed her right in front of everyone and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman broke one of God’s important rules. Moses’ law says she should be punished by throwing stones at her until she dies. What do you think we should do?” But here’s the thing – they weren’t really asking because they cared about doing the right thing. They were trying to trick Jesusᵇ! They thought no matter what He said, they could get Him in trouble. Instead of answering right away, Jesus did something surprising. He bent down and started writing something in the dirt with His finger. Nobody knows exactly what He wrote – maybe it was the sins that the angry men had done! When they kept bothering Him with their question, Jesus stood up and said something that made everyone’s mouth drop open: “Okay, here’s what we’ll do. Whoever has never done anything wrong can throw the first stone at her.” Then Jesus bent down and wrote in the dirt some more.

😳 Everyone Walks Away

You know what happened next? One by one, starting with the oldest men, everyone began to walk away! They all realized they had done wrong things too. Soon it was just Jesus and the scared woman standing there. Jesus looked at her kindly and asked, “Where did everyone go? Did anyone say you should be punished?” “No sir, no one did,” she answered quietly. Jesus smiled and said, “Well then, I don’t say you should be punished either. You can go now, but don’t do wrong things anymore. Live a good life!”

💡 Jesus is the Light of the World

Later, Jesus was talking to a big crowd of people, and He told them something incredible: “I am the light of the whole world! Anyone who follows Me will never have to walk around in scary darkness. Instead, they’ll have the light that gives real life!” This made some of the religious leaders really mad. They said, “You can’t just say things about yourself and expect us to believe you!” But Jesus explained, “Even when I talk about Myself, what I say is true, because I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you don’t understand any of that. You only think about things the way humans do, but I don’t judge people the way you do.”

🤔 Who is Jesus’ Father?

The religious leaders kept arguing with Jesus. They asked Him, “Where is this father you keep talking about?” Jesus answered, “You don’t really know Me, and you don’t know My Father either. If you knew Me, you would know My Father too.” Jesus was talking about God being His Father, but the religious leaders didn’t understand this amazing truth!

⬆️ Jesus Came from Heaven

Jesus tried to help them understand by saying, “I’m going to go away, and you’ll look for Me, but you won’t be able to find Me. Where I’m going, you can’t come.” This confused everyone. Some people wondered, “Is He going to hurt Himself?” But Jesus explained, “You are from down here on earth, but I am from up there in heaven. You belong to this world, but I don’t belong to this world. That’s why I told you that if you don’t believe that I am God’s Son, you’ll be separated from God forever.”

🙋‍♂️ “Who Are You Really?”

“Who are you exactly?” they asked Him. Jesus answered, “I am exactly who I’ve been telling you I am from the very beginning!” Many people still didn’t understand, so Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Manᶜ on a cross, then you’ll finally understand who I really am. You’ll know that I don’t do anything on My own – I only say what My heavenly Father teaches Me. God sent Me here, and He’s always with Me because I always do what makes Him happy.” Even though many people were confused, some began to believe that Jesus really was God’s Son!

🆓 The Truth Will Set You Free

To the people who were starting to believe in Him, Jesus said, “If you keep learning from Me and following My teachings, then you’re truly My followers. When you know the truth, the truth will make you free!” But some people got upset and said, “We’re Abraham’s family, and we’ve never been slaves to anyone! What do you mean we need to be set free?” Jesus explained something very important: “Here’s the truth – everyone who does wrong things becomes a slave to doing wrong things. A slave doesn’t get to stay in the family forever, but a son gets to stay forever. So if God’s Son sets you free, you’ll be truly free!”

😠 The Argument Gets Worse

The religious leaders kept getting angrier. They said, “Abraham is our father!” But Jesus told them, “If Abraham was really your father, you’d act like Abraham did. But instead, you’re trying to hurt Me, even though I’ve only told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did mean things like that!” “We’re not bad people!” they protested. “God is our only Father!” Jesus said something that made them really mad: “If God was really your Father, you would love Me, because I came from God. I didn’t come here on My own – God sent Me. Do you know why you can’t understand what I’m saying? It’s because you can’t really hear God’s voice. You’re actually following the devil instead of God. The devil has been a liar and a killer from the very beginning, and when he lies, that’s just the way he always talks. But because I tell you the truth, you don’t believe Me!”

😲 Before Abraham Was Born, I Am!

The religious leaders called Jesus terrible names, but Jesus said, “I’m not evil like you’re saying. I honor My Father, but you don’t honor Me. I’m not trying to make Myself look good – My Father is the one who makes Me look good, and He’s the judge of everything.” Then Jesus said something that amazed everyone: “I promise you this: anyone who obeys what I say will never really die!” “Now we know you’re crazy!” they shouted. “Abraham died, and all God’s prophets died too! Are you saying you’re greater than Abraham?” Jesus answered, “If I was just trying to make Myself look important, that wouldn’t mean anything. But My Father – the same God you claim to worship – He’s the one who makes Me important. You don’t really know Him, but I know Him perfectly. Your father Abraham was so excited about seeing My day that when he got to see it, he was incredibly happy!” “You’re not even 50 years old!” they said. “How could you have seen Abraham?” Then Jesus said the most amazing thing of all: “I promise you this truth: before Abraham was even born, I AM!”

🏃‍♂️ Jesus Escapes

When Jesus said “I AM” (which is God’s special name), the religious leaders knew He was claiming to be God! They were so angry that they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus hid Himself and slipped away from the temple, because it wasn’t time yet for what God had planned.

🌟 What This Means for Us

This amazing chapter shows us that Jesus is the light of the world who can free us from doing wrong things. Even when people were mean to Him and didn’t believe Him, Jesus kept loving them and telling them the truth. He showed mercy to someone who had done wrong, and He wants to show mercy to us too!

Footnotes for Kids

Religious leaders: These were like the strict teachers and rule-keepers at the temple. They knew a lot about God’s rules but had forgotten about God’s love. ᵇ Trying to trick Jesus: They thought they were being clever by asking Jesus a question that would get Him in trouble no matter how He answered it. But Jesus was much wiser than they were! ᶜ Son of Man: This was Jesus’ favorite way to talk about Himself. It meant He was both a real human person and also God’s Son with special power from heaven. ᵈ “I AM”: This is the special name God told Moses at the burning bush (you can read about it in Exodus 3:14). When Jesus said “I AM,” He was telling everyone that He is God! That’s why the religious leaders got so angry – they understood exactly what He was claiming.
  • 1
¹But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
  • 2
²At dawn He appeared again in the temple courtsᵃ, and all the people gathered around Him, so He sat down and began teaching them.
  • 3
³The Torah teachers and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group
  • 4
⁴and said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
  • 5
⁵Moses commanded us in the Torah to stone such women. Now what do You say?”
  • 6
⁶They were using this question as a trapᵇ, to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with His finger.
  • 7
⁷When they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
  • 8
⁸Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
  • 9
⁹At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
  • 10
¹⁰Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
  • 11
¹¹”No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
  • 12
¹²When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the worldᶜ. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
  • 13
¹³The Pharisees challenged Him, “Here You are, appearing as Your own witness; Your testimony is not valid.”
  • 14
¹⁴Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on My own behalf, My testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
  • 15
¹⁵You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
  • 16
¹⁶But if I do judge, My decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent Me.
  • 17
¹⁷In your own Torah it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
  • 18
¹⁸I am one who testifies for Myself; My other witness is the Father, who sent Me.”
  • 19
¹⁹Then they asked Him, “Where is Your father?” “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”
  • 20
²⁰He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courtsᵈ near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
  • 21
²¹Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
  • 22
²²This made the Judeans askᵉ, “Will He kill Himself? Is that why He says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
  • 23
²³But He continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • 24
²⁴I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am He, you will indeed die in your sins.”
  • 25
²⁵”Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
  • 26
²⁶“I have much to say in judgment of you. But He who sent Me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from Him I tell the world.”
  • 27
²⁷They did not understand that He was telling them about His Heavenly Father.
  • 28
²⁸So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Manᶠ, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing on My own but speak just what the Father has taught Me.
  • 29
²⁹The One who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.”
  • 30
³⁰Even as He spoke, many believed in Him.
  • 31
³¹To the Judeans who had believed Him, Jesus said, “If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples.
  • 32
³²Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
  • 33
³³They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendantsᵍ and have never been slaves of anyone. How can You say that we shall be set free?”
  • 34
³⁴Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
  • 35
³⁵Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
  • 36
³⁶So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
  • 37
³⁷I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill Me, because you have no room for My word.
  • 38
³⁸I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
  • 39
³⁹”Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
  • 40
⁴⁰As it is, you are looking for a way to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
  • 41
⁴¹You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God Himself.”
  • 42
⁴²Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own; God sent Me.
  • 43
⁴³Why is My language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
  • 44
⁴⁴You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
  • 45
⁴⁵Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me!
  • 46
⁴⁶Can any of you prove Me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe Me?
  • 47
⁴⁷Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
  • 48
⁴⁸The Judeans answered Him, “Aren’t we right in saying that You are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
  • 49
⁴⁹“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor My Father and you dishonor Me.
  • 50
⁵⁰I am not seeking glory for Myself; but there is One who seeks it, and He is the judge.
  • 51
⁵¹Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys My word will never see death.”
  • 52
⁵²At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that You are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet You say that whoever obeys Your word will never taste death.
  • 53
⁵³Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do You think You are?”
  • 54
⁵⁴Jesus replied, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the One who glorifies Me.
  • 55
⁵⁵Though you do not know Him, I know Him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and obey His word.
  • 56
⁵⁶Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing My day; he saw it and was glad.”
  • 57
⁵⁷”You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to Him, “and You have seen Abraham!”
  • 58
⁵⁸“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I AM!”ʰ
  • 59
⁵⁹At this, they picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid Himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Footnotes:

  • ²ᵃ Temple courts: The large outer courtyard of the temple where Jesus often taught, accessible to both Jews and Gentiles.
  • ⁶ᵇ Trap: The religious leaders were trying to create a no-win situation – if Jesus said stone her, He’d contradict His message of mercy; if He said don’t stone her, they could accuse Him of opposing Moses’ law.
  • ¹²ᶜ Light of the world: Jesus is claiming to be the source of spiritual illumination and truth for all humanity, contrasting the darkness of sin and ignorance.
  • ²⁰ᵈ Temple courts: Specifically near the treasury where people brought their monetary offerings, a very public area.
  • ²²ᵉ Judeans ask: Refers to the Jewish religious leaders who were opposing Jesus, not all Jewish people.
  • ²⁸ᶠ Son of Man: Jesus’ favorite title for Himself, emphasizing both His humanity and His divine authority, referencing Daniel 7:13-14.
  • ³³ᵍ Abraham’s descendants: They were claiming physical descent from Abraham gave them spiritual freedom, ignoring their current subjugation to Rome.
  • ⁵⁸ʰ “I AM”: Jesus uses the divine name revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14), clearly claiming to be God, which is why they immediately tried to stone Him for blasphemy.
  • 1
    (1) Now Yeshua went to the Mount of Olives
  • 2
    (2) and at dawn He came again into the Palatial-Temple and all the people came, He sat down teaching them.
  • 3
    (3) But the Torah-scribes and the Pharisees lead to Him a woman taken held in adultery, in the very act.
  • 4
    (4) They say this to test Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, upon the very act!”
  • 5
    (5) Now in the Torah, Moses commanded us to stone such as this, what therefore, do You say?
  • 6
    (6) But they said this, testing Him in order to have grounds to accuse Him. Now Yeshua bent down, writing with His finger on the earth, pretending to not hear.
  • 7
    (7) But as they persisted in asking Him, He stood up and said to them, “The one without deviating-sin, throw the first stone at her!”
  • 8
    (8) And again, He bent down and wrote on the earth.
  • 9
    (9) Now they heard by their convicted conscience and went out, one by one, from the eldest and Yeshua’s left alone and the woman was in the middle.
  • 10
    (10) Now standing up, Yeshua and nobody seeing, nevertheless said to her, “Woman, where are they? Your accusers!” Didn’t anybody condemn you?”
  • 11
    (11) And she said, “Nobody, Adonai!” Now Yeshua said, “I don’t condemn you either! Go and deviate-sin, no longer!”
  • 12
    (12) Therefore, again Yeshua spoke to them saying, “I AM the Light of the world, the one following Me won’t walk in darkness, rather will have the Light of the zoe-life.”
  • 13
    (13) Then the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself, Your testimony isn’t firm-truth (admissible)!”
  • 14
    (14) Yeshua replied and said to them, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is firm-truth because I know where I came from and where I’m going but you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going.
  • 15
    (15) You judge by the flesh, I don’t judge anybody!
  • 16
    (16) But even if I do judge, My judgement is firm-truth for I’m not alone, rather I and the Abba sending Me.
  • 17
    (17) But even in your Torah it’s written that the testimony of two men is firm-truth.
  • 18
    (18) I AM, the One testifying about Myself and the Abba who sends Me testifies about Me.”
  • 19
    (19) Therefore they said to Him, “Where is Your Abba?” Yeshua replied, “You know neither Me nor My Abba, if you knew Me you would know My Abba also.”
  • 20
    (20) These spoken-words, He spoke in the treasury as He taught in the Palatial-Temple and nobody arrested Him because His hour hadn’t yet come.
  • 21
    (21) Therefore He said again to them, “I go away and you will seek Me and will die in your deviating-sin. Where I’m going, you can’t come.”
  • 22
    (22) Then the Judeans said, “Surely, He won’t kill Himself, will He? Because He says, ‘Where I’m going, you can’t come!'”
  • 23
    (23) And He said to them, “You are from below, I AM from above! You are of this world, I AM not of this world.
  • 24
    (24) Therefore I said to you that you will die in your deviting-sins for unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your deviating-sins.”
  • 25
    (25) So they said to Him, “Who are You?” Yeshua said to them, “That which I’ve been saying to you from the beginning.
  • 26
    (26) I have much to speak and to judge about you, yet the One sending Me is firm-truth. That which I hear from Him, this I speak to the world.
  • 27
    (27) They didn’t realise that, The Abba, He was speaking of to them.
  • 28
    (28) Therefore, Yeshua said, “When you lift up the Son of Humanity, then you will know that I AM! I do nothing of Myself, rather I speak this like The Abba taught Me.”
  • 29
    (29) The One sending Me is with Me, He hasn’t left Me alone because I always do what pleases Him.
  • 30
    (30) As He spoke this, many believed in Him.
  • 31
    (31) Therefore Yeshua said to those Judeans who believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples (talmidim)
  • 32
    (32) and you will know the firm-truth and the firm-truth will set you free.”
  • 33
    (33) They answered to Him, “We are Abraham’s (Avraham) seed and have never been enslaved! How do You say that, ‘You will be free?'”
  • 34
    (34) Yeshua replied to them, “Amen, amen I tell you that everyone doing deviating-sin is deviating-sin’s slave.
  • 35
    (35) But the slave doesn’t remain in the house into the age, the son remains into the age.
  • 36
    (36) Therefore if The Son sets you free, you will actually be free.
  • 37
    (37) I know that you are Abraham’s seed but you seek to kill Me because My word doesn’t take hold in you.
  • 38
    (38) I speak which I have seen from The Abba therefore you also do which you heard from your father.”
  • 39
    (39) They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father!” Yeshua said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do Abraham’s works.”
  • 40
    (40) But now you seek to kill Me, a man that tells you the firm-truth which I heard from אֱלֹהִים Elohim (God)! This, Abraham didn’t do!
  • 41
    (41) You are doing the work of your father!” They said to Him, “We weren’t born of sexual immorality, we have one father elohim.”
  • 42
    (42) Yeshua said to them, “If אֱלֹהִים Elohim were your Abba, you would love Me because I go out and have come from אֱלֹהִים Elohim for I don’t come from Myself, rather that One sends Me.”
  • 43
    (43) Why don’t you understand this, My way of speaking? Because you can’t hear My word.
  • 44
    (44) You are from your father the opposing-devil and you want to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and doesn’t stand in the firm-truth because there isn’t firm-truth in him. Whenever he speaks the deception, he speaks from himself because he’s a deceiver and the father of it.
  • 45
    (45) And because I speak the firm-truth, you don’t believe Me.
  • 46
    (46) Which of you convicts Me of deviating-sin? If I speak firm-truth why don’t you believe Me?
  • 47
    (47) One who is from אֱלֹהִים Elohim hears the spoken-words of אֱלֹהִים Elohim. For of this you don’t hear because you aren’t from The אֱלֹהִים Elohim.
  • 48
    (48) The Judeans answered and said to Him, “Don’t we say correctly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
  • 49
    (49) Yeshua answered, “I don’t have a demon rather I honour My Abba and you dishonour Me.
  • 50
    (50) Now I don’t seek My glory, there’s One who seeks and judges.
  • 51
    (51) Amen, amen I tell you, if anybody keeps My word he will never, ever see death in this age.
  • 52
    (52) The Judeans said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died and the prophets! And You say, ‘If anybody keeps My word he will never, ever taste death in this age!’
  • 53
    (53) Surely, You aren’t greater than our father Abraham who died? The prophets died too, who are You?”
  • 54
    (54) Yeshua replied, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing! It’s My Abba who glorifies Me of whom you say that, ‘He’s our אֱלֹהִים Elohim.’
  • 55
    (55) You don’t know Him but I know Him and if I say you don’t know Him, I’m a deceiver like you yet I do know Him and keep His word.
  • 56
    (56) Your father Abraham was glad to see My day and saw and rejoiced!
  • 57
    (57) Then the Judeans said to Him, “You aren’t yet 50 years old and you’ve seen Abraham!”
  • 58
    (58) Yeshua said to them, “Amen, amen I tell you, before Abraham came into being. I AM!”
  • 59
    (59) Then they picked up stones to throw upon Him but Yeshua was hidden and went out the Palatial-Temple.

The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
  • 14
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, [yet] my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
  • 15
Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
  • 16
And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
  • 17
It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
  • 18
I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
  • 19
Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
  • 20
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
  • 21
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
  • 22
Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
  • 23
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • 24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.
  • 25
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even [the same] that I said unto you from the beginning.
  • 26
I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
  • 27
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
  • 28
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
  • 29
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
  • 30
As he spake these words, many believed on him.
  • 31
    Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;
  • 32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • 33
They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
  • 34
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
  • 35
And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: [but] the Son abideth ever.
  • 36
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
  • 37
I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
  • 38
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
  • 39
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
  • 40
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
  • 41
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, [even] God.
  • 42
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
  • 43
Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word.
  • 44
Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
  • 45
And because I tell [you] the truth, ye believe me not.
  • 46
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
  • 47
He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.
  • 48
Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
  • 49
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
  • 50
And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
  • 51
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
  • 52
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
  • 53
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
  • 54
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
  • 55
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
  • 56
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw [it], and was glad.
  • 57
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
  • 58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
  • 59
Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
  • 1
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
  • 2
Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
  • 3
The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
  • 4
and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
  • 5
In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
  • 6
They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
  • 7
When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
  • 8
And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
  • 9
When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
  • 10
Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
  • 11
“No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
  • 12
Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
  • 13
So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
  • 14
Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
  • 15
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
  • 16
But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
  • 17
Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
  • 18
I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
  • 19
“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
  • 20
He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
  • 21
Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
  • 22
So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
  • 23
Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • 24
That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
  • 25
“Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
  • 26
“I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”
  • 27
They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
  • 28
So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.
  • 29
He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
  • 30
As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
  • 31
So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
  • 32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
  • 33
“We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
  • 34
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
  • 35
A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
  • 36
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
  • 37
I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
  • 38
I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
  • 39
“Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.
  • 40
But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
  • 41
You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”
  • 42
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
  • 43
Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
  • 44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
  • 45
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!
  • 46
Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
  • 47
Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
  • 48
The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”
  • 49
“I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
  • 50
I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.
  • 51
Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
  • 52
“Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.
  • 53
Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”
  • 54
Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say ‘He is our God.’
  • 55
You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
  • 56
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.”
  • 57
Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
  • 58
“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
  • 59
At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.

John Chapter 8 Commentary

The Woman, The Stones, and The Light: Why John 8 Changes Everything

What’s John 8 about?

It’s the story that makes religious people squirm and sinners breathe easier – Jesus meets a woman caught in adultery, faces down her accusers with mysterious words in the dirt, then declares himself the light of the world. This chapter reveals how Jesus handles both our worst moments and our deepest need for truth.

The Full Context

John 8 drops us right into the most uncomfortable religious standoff in history. We’re in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles, probably around AD 29, and the religious leaders are setting a trap. They’ve dragged a woman caught in adultery before Jesus – not out of concern for justice, but to create an impossible situation. If Jesus says stone her, he contradicts his message of mercy. If he says let her go, he appears to dismiss God’s law. It’s the perfect religious gotcha moment, except they’re dealing with someone who sees right through their game.

This passage sits at the heart of John’s Gospel, which was written to prove that Jesus is the Son of God. John carefully builds his case through seven “I Am” statements, and here we get one of the most powerful: “I am the light of the world.” The woman caught in adultery story (which some ancient manuscripts place elsewhere) flows perfectly into Jesus’s declaration about light and darkness, truth and lies. The chapter reveals how Jesus handles both moral failure and religious hypocrisy – and why his approach to both revolutionizes everything we think we know about God.

What the Ancient Words Tell Us

When the religious leaders say this woman was “caught in the very act” of adultery, the Greek word is katalambanō – it means seized, overtaken, surprised in the act. But here’s what makes you scratch your head: where’s the man? Jewish law required both parties to be brought forward for judgment. The selective enforcement tells us everything about their motives.

Grammar Geeks

When Jesus says “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone,” he uses a specific Greek construction that emphasizes ongoing sinlessness, not just being sinless in that moment. He’s essentially saying, “The person who has never sinned – that person can throw the first stone.” Game over.

Jesus’s response is fascinating. He bends down and writes in the dirt with his finger. The Greek word katagraphō suggests he was writing something down deliberately, possibly even drawing or tracing. Some scholars think he was writing the accusers’ names and their secret sins, others believe he was referencing Jeremiah 17:13, which talks about names being “written in the dust” when people turn away from God.

The really stunning moment comes when Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world” (egō eimi to phōs tou kosmou). This isn’t just a nice metaphor – it’s a direct claim to divinity. Light was how God revealed himself in the temple, and here Jesus is saying he is that light for everyone, everywhere.

What Would the Original Audience Have Heard?

Picture this scene during the Feast of Tabernacles, when massive golden lampstands illuminated the temple courts all night long. The whole city would be buzzing with light symbolism, remembering how God led their ancestors through the wilderness with a pillar of fire. Then Jesus shows up and says, “Actually, I’m the light you’ve been looking for.”

Did You Know?

During the Feast of Tabernacles, priests would light four enormous golden menorahs in the Court of Women, each 75 feet high. The light was so bright that it illuminated every courtyard in Jerusalem. Jesus’s declaration about being the light of the world would have been impossible to miss against this backdrop.

The crowd would have immediately caught the implications. This wasn’t just a teacher making a point – this was someone claiming to be God’s presence among them. The Pharisees’ immediate pushback (“You testify about yourself; your testimony is not valid”) shows they understood exactly what Jesus was claiming.

For the woman, hearing “Neither do I condemn you” would have been literally life-saving. Under Jewish law, she should be dead. Instead, she’s encountering someone who sees her shame, acknowledges her sin (“go and sin no more”), but refuses to let her past define her future.

Wrestling with the Text

Here’s where things get really interesting – and honestly, a bit uncomfortable. Jesus doesn’t minimize the woman’s sin or pretend it doesn’t matter. He clearly tells her to “go and sin no more.” But he also doesn’t condemn her. How do we hold both truth and grace without compromising either?

Wait, That’s Strange…

Some of the earliest manuscripts don’t include the woman caught in adultery story at all, and others place it in different locations. Most scholars believe it’s an authentic story about Jesus that was inserted later. Whether it originally belonged here or not, it perfectly captures how Jesus dealt with both sin and religious hypocrisy.

The religious leaders thought they had Jesus trapped between law and love. But Jesus shows there’s a third option: truth. He doesn’t ignore the law (adultery is still wrong), and he doesn’t ignore grace (the woman isn’t condemned). Instead, he exposes the hypocrisy of selective justice and offers a path forward that acknowledges both human failure and divine mercy.

This creates some tension for us too. We want clear categories – good people and bad people, sinners and saints. But Jesus keeps messing with our neat divisions, showing mercy to “sinners” while confronting religious people about their pride and hypocrisy.

How This Changes Everything

The light metaphor isn’t just poetic – it’s revolutionary. In a world where religious leaders controlled access to God through complex rules and temple rituals, Jesus declares that he is the way people encounter divine truth. Not through religious institutions, not through perfect behavior, but through him.

“Jesus doesn’t ask us to clean up before we come to him – he asks us to come to him so we can be cleaned up.”

This completely flips the script on how we think about moral failure and spiritual growth. The woman’s story shows us that our worst moments don’t disqualify us from God’s love – they’re often where we first encounter it most powerfully. Meanwhile, the religious leaders’ reaction reveals how spiritual pride can blind us to our own need for that same grace.

Notice that Jesus calls himself the light of the world, not just the light of Israel or the light of religious people. This universal claim means that everyone – regardless of their moral track record, religious background, or social standing – can find truth and life through him.

The practical implications are huge. If Jesus is the light of the world, then following him means we stop trying to navigate life by our own limited vision and start trusting his perspective on everything – our failures, our purpose, our relationships, our future.

Key Takeaway

The same Jesus who wrote mysteriously in the dirt and refused to condemn the woman is the one who claims to be the light that illuminates everything. He sees our failures clearly but loves us completely, offering both truth about who we are and grace for who we can become.
