🌟 Paul’s Letter to His Friends 🌟 (1 Thessalonians Chapter 4)

📚 Keep Growing and Learning

Paul wrote to his friends: “You’re doing such a great job living the way Jesus wants you to! But guess what? You can keep getting even better at it! It’s like practicing piano or soccer – the more you practice, the better you get at following Jesus.”

🛡️ God Wants Us to Make Good Choices

God has a special plan for each of us. He wants us to be holya, which means we belong to Him in a special way. Just like you wouldn’t put mud in your favorite toy box, God wants us to keep our hearts and bodies clean by making good choices. This means we should treat our bodies like the special gifts they are, and always treat other people with kindness and respect. God sees everything we do, and He wants us to be honest and fair with everyone – especially our friends and family.
a. Holy: This means “set apart” or “special.” It’s like being on God’s team and wearing His jersey! When we’re holy, we live differently than people who don’t know Jesus.

❤️ Love Like Jesus

You know what’s really cool? God Himself has been teaching you how to love other people! You don’t need anyone to write you instructions because the Holy Spiritb living in your heart shows you how to be loving and kind. You’re already doing great at loving your Christian friends, but here’s a fun challenge: try to love them even more! Look for new ways to be kind, helpful, and encouraging.
b. Holy Spirit: This is God living inside the hearts of people who believe in Jesus. The Holy Spirit is like having God as your best friend who’s always with you, teaching you and helping you make good choices.

🏠 Live Quietly and Work Hard

Here’s some really practical advice: Try to live peacefully, don’t gossip or get into other people’s business, and work hard at whatever you do – whether it’s chores, schoolwork, or helping your family. When you live this way, people who don’t know Jesus yet will notice how different and wonderful you are. They might even want to learn about Jesus because of how you live!

🌅 Amazing News About Heaven

Now Paul wanted to tell his friends something really important about people who have died and gone to be with Jesus. He didn’t want them to be sad like people who don’t know about heaven. Here’s the incredible truth: Just like Jesus died and came back to life, everyone who believes in Jesus will live forever too! When Jesus died on the cross, it wasn’t the end – He came back to life three days later. And because of that, everyone who loves Jesus gets to live forever with Him!

🎺 Jesus is Coming Back!

Jesus Himself told us this amazing secret: One day, He’s going to come back to earth! It will be the most exciting day ever. Here’s what will happen: Jesus will come down from heaven with a loud, happy shoutc. There will be an angel making announcements, and God will blow a trumpet like the most amazing parade ever! First, all the people who died believing in Jesus will come back to life with new, perfect bodies that will never get sick or hurt. Then, everyone who is still alive and loves Jesus will get to fly up into the sky to meet Jesus in the cloudsd! Can you imagine how awesome that will be? It will be like the best family reunion ever, except it will last forever!
c. Loud, happy shout: This isn’t a scary yell – it’s like when you’re really excited and call out to your friends! Jesus will be so happy to see us that He’ll shout with joy.
d. Meet Jesus in the clouds: This means we’ll get to fly! God will give us special bodies that can do amazing things, just like Jesus could do after He came back to life.

🤗 Encourage Each Other

Paul ended this part of his letter by saying: “Tell each other this good news! When someone is sad or scared, remind them about this wonderful day that’s coming. Help each other remember that Jesus is coming back and we get to be with Him forever!” So the next time you or a friend feels worried, you can say, “Hey, remember that Jesus is coming back for us, and it’s going to be the most amazing day ever!”
  • 1
¹Finally, brothers and sisters, we have more to share with you. We taught you how to live in a way that brings joy to God, and you’re already doing this beautifully. But we encourage you to grow even more in this way of life.
  • 2
²You remember the instructions we gave you through the authority of the Lord Jesus.
  • 3
³This is God’s will for you: to live setᵃ apart for Him. Stay away from sexual immorality.
  • 4
⁴Each of you should learn to control your own bodyᵇ with honor and respect,
  • 5
⁵not driven by lustful passion like the nations who don’t know God.
  • 6
⁶Don’t take advantage of or cheat your brother or sister in business or relationships. The Lord will judge all such behavior, as we’ve warned you before with great seriousness.
  • 7
⁷God didn’t call us to live impure lives, but to be holy.
  • 8
⁸Therefore, anyone who rejects this teaching isn’t rejecting us—they’re rejecting God, who gives you His Holy Spirit.
  • 9
⁹Now, about loving your fellow believers: you don’t need us to write instructions because God Himself has taught you to love one another.
  • 10
¹⁰And indeed, you do love all the believers throughout Macedonia. But we encourage you, brothers and sisters, to love even more.
  • 11
¹¹Make it your ambition to live quietly, mind your own business, and work with your hands, just as we instructed you.
  • 12
¹²This way, your daily life will earn the respect of outsiders, and you won’t be dependent on anyone for your needs.
  • 13
¹³Brothers and sisters, we don’t want you to be uninformed about those who have diedᶜ, so you won’t grieve like others who have no hope.
  • 14
¹⁴We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
  • 15
¹⁵According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you this: We who are still alive when the Lord returns will not precede those who have already died.
  • 16
¹⁶The Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangelᵈ, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the dead in Messiah will rise.
  • 17
¹⁷After that, we who are still alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
  • 18
¹⁸Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

Footnotes:

  • ³ᵃ Set apart: The Greek word a synonym for holiness means to be consecrated or dedicated exclusively to God’s purposes, living distinctly different from the surrounding culture.
  • ⁴ᵇ Control your own body: Literally “possess his own vessel,” referring to maintaining sexual purity and self-discipline in all physical desires.
  • ¹³ᶜ Those who have died: Literally “fallen asleep,” a gentle euphemism early Christians used for death, emphasizing that death is temporary like sleep.
  • ¹⁶ᵈ Archangel: The highest-ranking angel, likely Michael, who serves as God’s chief messenger and warrior in spiritual battles.
  • 1
    (1) Remaining then brothers, we request and urge you in אָדוֹן Adonai (Lord) ישוע Yeshua (Yah’s Salvation). So that, as you received from us, how you should walk and please אֱלֹהִים Elohim (God), just as you do also walk, so that you abound more so.
  • 2
    (2) For you know what commandments we gave you through the אָדוֹן Adonai Yeshua.
  • 3
    (3) For this is the will of יהוה YAHWEH (I AM, THAT I AM), your set-apart holiness, that you abstain from sexual deviation,
  • 4
    (4) that each of you know how to acquire his own vessel in set-apart holiness and honour.
  • 5
    (5) And not in passionate lust like the Gentile nations who don’t know יהוה YAHWEH.
  • 6
    (6) That nobody transgress and exploit his brother in this matter because אָדוֹן Adonai is avenging in all this, just as we also told and warned you beforehand.
  • 7
    (7) For יהוה YAHWEH hasn’t called us upon impurity but rather in set-apart holiness.
  • 8

    (8) Therefore, the one rejecting, isn’t rejecting man but rather יהוה YAHWEH giving His רוּחַ Ruach HaKodesh (The Set-Apart Holy Spirit).

  • 9
    (9) Now about brotherly love, there’s no need to write to you because you are taught by God to truly love one another.
  • 10
    (10) Because you practice it for all the brothers in all Macedonia (Extended Land; Tall?). But we urge you brothers to abound more so
  • 11
    (11) and make it your ambition to be at rest, minding one’s own business and working with your hands, just as we commanded you.
  • 12
    (12) So that you will walk becomingly towards outsiders and have need of nothing.
  • 13
    (13) But we don’t want you to be ignorant brothers about those fallen asleep, so that you won’t grieve as the rest who have no hope.
  • 14
    (14) For if we believe that ישוע Yeshua died and rose again, even so יהוה YAHWEH will bring with Him those who’ve fallen asleep through Yeshua.
  • 15
    (15) For this we say to you in אָדוֹן Adonai’s Word that we alive who remain for the coming presence of The אָדוֹן Adonai won’t overtake those fallen asleep.
  • 16
    (16) For The אָדוֹן Adonai Himself will come down from sky above in a commanding shout, in the voice of an archangel messenger and in the trumpet blowing of אֱלֹהִים Elohim. And the dead in Mashiach will rise first of all.
  • 17
Then we who are living, the ones remaining, will be caught away together with them in the clouds to greet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
  • 18
    (18) So then, comfort one another in these words.

  • 1
Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort [you] by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, [so] ye would abound more and more.
  • 2
For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
  • 3
For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
  • 4
    That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
  • 5
Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
  • 6
That no [man] go beyond and defraud his brother in [any] matter: because that the Lord [is] the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
  • 7
For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
  • 8
He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
  • 9
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
  • 10
    And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
  • 11
    And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
  • 12
That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and [that] ye may have lack of nothing.
  • 13
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
  • 14
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
  • 15
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
  • 16
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
  • 17
Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
  • 18
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
  • 1
Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus to live in a way that is pleasing to God, just as you have received from us. This is how you already live, so you should do so all the more.
  • 2
For you know the instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
  • 3
    For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality;
  • 4
each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,
  • 5
    not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God;
  • 6
and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you.
  • 7
For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness.
  • 8

Anyone, then, who rejects this command does not reject man but God, the very One who gives you His Holy Spirit.

  • 9
Now about brotherly love, you do not need anyone to write to you, because you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
  • 10
And you are indeed showing this love to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to excel more and more
  • 11
and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters, and to work with your own hands, as we instructed you.
  • 12
Then you will behave properly toward outsiders, without being dependent on anyone.
  • 13
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
  • 14
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
  • 15
By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.
  • 16
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise.
  • 17

  • 18
Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians Chapter 4 Commentary

The Life That Makes People Wonder

What’s 1 Thessalonians 4 about?

Paul writes to new believers about living in ways that honor God – addressing sexual purity, brotherly love, and the hope of Christ’s return. It’s both intensely practical and profoundly hopeful, answering the question: “How do we live as Christians in a world that doesn’t get it?”

The Full Context

Paul’s writing to the Thessalonian church around 50-51 AD, just months after planting this community during his second missionary journey. These weren’t seasoned believers – they were brand new Christians navigating faith in a Roman city known for its loose sexual morals and idol worship. They’d embraced the gospel enthusiastically, but they had questions. Lots of them. How should they live differently? What about sex and marriage? And what happens when fellow believers die before Jesus returns?

This chapter sits at the heart of Paul’s letter, moving from encouragement about their faith to practical instruction about Christian living. Paul’s addressing real concerns from a real community – the kind of nitty-gritty questions every new believer faces. The passage flows naturally from personal holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8) to community love (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12) to eternal hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). It’s Paul at his pastoral best – theologian, shepherd, and friend all rolled into one.

What the Ancient Words Tell Us

When Paul says “Finally, brothers and sisters” in 1 Thessalonians 4:1, he’s not wrapping up – he’s shifting gears. The Greek word loipon means “from now on” or “as for what remains.” Think of it like “Now then…” Paul’s moving from encouragement to instruction.

The phrase “how to live in order to please God” uses the Greek peripateo, which literally means “to walk around.” But Paul’s not talking about physical walking – he’s describing your entire way of life. In ancient Jewish thought, your “walk” was your character in motion, the daily rhythm of choices that reveals who you really are.

Grammar Geeks

When Paul uses hagiasmos (sanctification) in verse 3, he’s not talking about a one-time event but an ongoing process. The Greek structure suggests something that’s both God’s work in you and your active participation with Him.

What Would the Original Audience Have Heard?

Picture Thessalonica – a bustling port city where Roman soldiers, Greek merchants, and local residents created a melting pot of cultures and moral standards. Sexual license wasn’t just accepted; it was woven into religious practice through temple prostitution. The idea that your body was sacred? Revolutionary.

When Paul talks about avoiding porneia (sexual immorality) in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, his original audience would have understood this as a complete paradigm shift. This wasn’t about rules for the sake of rules – it was about recognizing that following Jesus changes everything about how you view your body, your relationships, and your purpose.

The instruction to “control your own body” (1 Thessalonians 4:4) would have sounded almost impossible in a culture where sexual desire was considered a force of nature you couldn’t resist. Paul’s essentially saying, “Your body isn’t just biology – it’s a temple.”

Did You Know?

Archaeological evidence from Thessalonica shows the city had multiple temples dedicated to fertility gods where sexual rituals were common. Paul’s teaching about sexual purity wasn’t just moral instruction – it was cultural revolution.

Wrestling with the Text

Here’s where things get interesting. In 1 Thessalonians 4:6, Paul warns against wronging or taking advantage of “a brother or sister.” The Greek word pleonekteo suggests more than just cheating in business – it’s about crossing boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed, particularly in sexual relationships.

But Paul immediately follows this with something unexpected: “The Lord is an avenger in all these things” (1 Thessalonians 4:6). Why does he get so serious so quickly? Because sexual sin doesn’t just hurt the people directly involved – it fractures community. It breaks trust, creates shame, and destroys the very relationships that are supposed to reflect God’s love to the watching world.

The transition to brotherly love in 1 Thessalonians 4:9 isn’t random. Paul’s connecting the dots: when you honor God with your body, you’re better able to love others authentically. Sexual purity and genuine community love aren’t separate topics – they’re two sides of the same coin.

How This Changes Everything

The final section about Jesus’ return (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) addresses their deepest fear: what happens to believers who die before the Second Coming? Paul’s answer reveals something beautiful about the Christian worldview – death is not defeat.

The word Paul uses for “sleep” (koimao) was common euphemism for death, but when Christians used it, they meant something different. Sleep implies waking up. When Paul describes the “dead in Christ” rising first (1 Thessalonians 4:16), he’s painting a picture of resurrection that would have blown their minds.

Wait, That’s Strange…

Paul says we’ll be “caught up” (harpazo) to meet the Lord “in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). Why the air? In ancient cosmology, the air was the domain of spiritual forces. Jesus meeting us there demonstrates His complete victory over every power that opposes God.

The phrase “we who are still alive” (1 Thessalonians 4:17) shows Paul expected Jesus might return in his lifetime. This wasn’t naive optimism – it was the proper Christian posture of readiness and hope that should characterize every generation.

“Paul isn’t just teaching doctrine – he’s offering comfort that changes how we grieve, hope, and live.”

Key Takeaway

1 Thessalonians 4 reveals that Christian living isn’t about following religious rules – it’s about embodying God’s character in your relationships, your sexuality, and your hope. When your life reflects God’s holiness and love, you become a living question mark that points others toward Christ.
