🤗 Paul’s Big Heart for His Friends

Paul the apostle wrote a letter to his friends in a city called Colossae. He wanted them to know that even though he had never met some of them face to face, he was thinking about them all the time! Paul was like a coach cheering from the sidelines – he wanted his friends to feel encouraged and loved. “` Paul told them, “I want you to be filled with joy and to understand God’s amazing secret – and that secret is Jesus the Messiah King!” You see, in Jesus, God hid all the best treasures of wisdom and smartness, like the most amazing treasure chest ever!

⚠️ Watch Out for Tricky People

Paul warned his friends to be careful of people who might try to trick them with fancy words that sound smart but aren’t true. It’s like when someone tries to convince you that eating candy for breakfast is healthy – it might sound good, but it’s not true! Even though Paul wasn’t there in person, he could see in his heart how strong their faith in Jesus was, and it made him so happy!
🏆 Coach Paul: Paul was like a spiritual coach who cared deeply about his team (the believers). Even from far away, he was cheering them on and helping them grow stronger in their faith!

🌳 Growing Strong Like a Tree

Paul told his friends something really important: “You received Jesus as your King, so keep following Him every single day! Let your roots grow deep in Him, like a big strong tree. Build your life on Him like building a house on solid rock, and let your faith get stronger and stronger. And don’t forget to say ‘Thank You!’ to God all the time!”

🚫 Don’t Get Fooled by Fake Wisdom

Paul warned, “Be super careful! Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophya that sounds smart but is actually just made-up human ideas instead of God’s truth about Jesus.” Here’s the amazing thing: In Jesus, ALL of God lived in a human body! That means when you have Jesus, you have everything you need from God. Jesus is the Boss over every ruler and power in the whole universe!
🤔 Empty Philosophy: This means ideas that sound really smart and important but don’t have God’s truth in them. It’s like a pretty gift box that’s completely empty inside – it looks good but there’s nothing valuable there!

💦 What Baptism Really Means

Paul explained that when they believed in Jesus, it was like getting a special kind of circumcisionb – but not done by doctors. Instead, God removed their old sinful hearts and gave them new clean hearts! When they were baptized in water, it was like being buried with Jesus and then coming back to life with Him through God’s amazing power – the same power that brought Jesus back from the dead!
✂️ Spiritual Circumcision: In the Old Testament, baby boys got circumcised as a sign they belonged to God’s family. Paul is saying that when we believe in Jesus, God does something even better – He gives us completely new hearts that love Him!

🗂️ God Erased Our Debt

Before Jesus, we all had a big list of wrong things we had done – like a report card full of bad grades. But God took that list and completely erased it! He nailed it to the cross where Jesus died. It’s like God took a giant eraser and wiped away every mistake we ever made! And when Jesus died on the cross, He defeated all the evil spiritual powers. He made them look foolish, like a king parading around the bad guys He had captured in battle!

🍎 Don’t Worry About Food Rules

Some people were trying to make Paul’s friends follow lots of rules about what they could eat, what holidays to celebrate, and other things. Paul said, “Don’t let anyone judge you about stuff like that! Those old rules were just shadows pointing to Jesus – but now that Jesus is here, we don’t need the shadows anymore!” Paul warned them about people who acted super humble and claimed to see angels and have special visions. These people were actually very proud and weren’t connected to Jesus, who is like the Head of the body. When the whole body stays connected to Jesus the Head, then the body grows healthy and strong the way God wants it to.

🌍 You Don’t Belong to the World Anymore

Paul reminded his friends: “Since you died to your old life and came alive with Jesus, why are you still following the world’s rules?” Some people were making up silly rules like “Don’t touch this! Don’t taste that! Don’t handle the other thing!” Paul said these human-made rules might look wise and spiritual, but they’re actually useless! They can’t change your heart or help you become more like Jesus. It’s like trying to become a better person by just following a bunch of “don’t do this” rules – it doesn’t work!
📜 Human Rules vs. God’s Way: Imagine if someone said, “If you want to be a good friend, never eat ice cream, never watch TV, and never laugh loudly.” Those rules might sound serious, but they have nothing to do with actually being a good friend! God’s way is much better – He changes our hearts from the inside so we WANT to do good things!

🎯 The Big Point

The most important thing Paul wanted his friends to remember was this: Jesus is everything you need! Don’t let anyone trick you into thinking you need to follow extra rules or special teachings to be closer to God. When you have Jesus, you have it all!
  • 1
¹I want you to know how hard I’m fighting for you and for the believers in Laodicea, and for all who haven’t met me face to face.
  • 2
²My heart’s desire is that you would be encouraged, united in love, and filled with the rich confidence that comes from true understanding. I want you to know the mystery of God—which is the Messiah Himself.ᵃ
  • 3
³In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • 4
⁴I’m telling you this so no one can fool you with smooth-talking arguments that sound convincing but lead you astray.
  • 5
⁵Even though I’m not there with you physically, I’m with you in spirit, and I’m thrilled to see how disciplined you are and how solid your faith in the Messiah is.
  • 6
⁶So then, just as you received Messiah King Jesus as your Lord, keep walking in Him.
  • 7
⁷Let your roots go deep in Him, let Him be the foundation you’re built on, and let your faith grow stronger just as you were taught. Overflow with gratitude!
  • 8
⁸Watch out! Don’t let anyone capture you through hollow philosophy and empty deception based on human tradition and the basic principles of this worldᵇ rather than on the Messiah.
  • 9
⁹For in Him, God’s full nature lives in bodily form,ᶜ
  • 10
¹⁰and you have been given that same fullness in Him. He is the head over every ruler and authority.
  • 11
¹¹In Him you were also circumcised, but not by human hands. Your old sinful nature was stripped away in the circumcision that the Messiah performed.
  • 12
¹²You were buried with Him in baptism, and in baptism you were also raised with Him through faith in the mighty power of God, who raised Him from the dead.
  • 13
¹³When you were dead in your sins and your uncircumcised flesh,ᵈ God made you alive together with the Messiah. He forgave us all our sins,
  • 14
¹⁴wiping out the certificate of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. He set it aside by nailing it to the cross.
  • 15
¹⁵He disarmed the rulers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them by triumphing over them through the cross.ᵉ
  • 16
¹⁶So don’t let anyone judge you about what you eat or drink, or about celebrating festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths.
  • 17
¹⁷These things are only shadows pointing to what was coming—but the reality is found in the Messiah.
  • 18
¹⁸Don’t let anyone cheat you out of your prize by insisting on false humility and angel worship. Such people go on and on about visions they’ve had, but they’re puffed up with pride by their unspiritual minds.
  • 19
¹⁹They’re not connected to the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows with the growth that God gives.
  • 20
²⁰Since you died with the Messiah to the basic principles of this world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world by submitting to regulations like:
  • 21
²¹”Don’t handle this, don’t taste that, don’t touch the other thing?”
  • 22
²²These rules all refer to things that perish when used and are based on human commands and teachings.
  • 23
²³Such regulations may have a reputation for wisdom with their self-imposed worship, false humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but they have no value in restraining the flesh.ᶠ

Footnotes:

  • ²ᵃ Mystery of God: In Paul’s writings, “mystery” refers to God’s hidden plan now revealed—that through Christ, both Jews and Gentiles are united as one people.
  • ⁸ᵇ Basic principles of this world: Refers to elementary spiritual forces or worldly philosophies that once enslaved humanity before the Messiah’s victory.
  • ⁹ᶜ God’s full nature lives in bodily form: The complete divine essence (deity) of God dwells physically in Jesus—He is fully God and fully human.
  • ¹³ᵈ Uncircumcised flesh: Paul uses this to describe the Gentiles’ former spiritual state—outside God’s covenant people and dead in sin.
  • ¹⁵ᵉ Triumphing over them through the cross: Like a Roman general parading defeated enemies, Christ publicly displayed His victory over spiritual powers through His death and resurrection.
  • ²³ᶠ No value in restraining the flesh: Human-made religious rules may appear spiritual but are powerless to actually transform the heart or overcome sinful desires.
  • 1
    (1) Now I want you to know how great a fight I’ve had for you and those in Laodicea (Opinions; Customs) and for whoever hasn’t seen me in face personally.
  • 2
So that their hearts may be encouraged, united together in love (agape) towards all the wealth of the complete assurance of understanding into the true knowledge, the mystery of יהוה Yahweh ישוע Yeshua.
  • 3
    (3) In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • 4
    (4) I say this, so that nobody will deceive you in persuasive speech.
  • 5

    (5) For though I’m absent in body, yet I’m with you in The רוּחַ Ruach-Spirit rejoicing! In accordance to seeing your priestly succession and your firm believing faith towards Mashiach.

  • 6
    (6) So then as you’ve received The Mashiach Yeshua, The אָדוֹן Adonai-Lord, walk in Him,
  • 7
    (7) firmly rooted and built up in Him. And established in your believing faith, just as you were instructed in overflowing gratitude.
  • 8
    (8) See that nothing, nobody is taking you captive through philosophy and empty handed deception according to the tradition of men, elementary principles of this world and not according to Mashiach.
  • 9
    (9) For in Him all the complete fullness of The Godhead dwells bodily.
  • 10
    (10) In Him you’ve been made complete, He’s the head of every ruler and authority
  • 11
    (11) and in Him you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands. In the removal of the fleshly body in the The Mashiach’s circumcision.
  • 12
    (12) And buried with Him in immersion, in which you were also raised up through believing faith in יהוה YAHWEH’S working power, to raise Him from the dead.
  • 13
    (13) When you were dead in your shortfalls and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our shortfalls.
  • 14
    (14) He cancelled the debt certificate of decrees against us, which was hostile to us, He took it from the middle (centrestage), nailing it to the cross!
  • 15
    (15) When He had stripped off the rulers and authorities, He made a bold public display of them in triumph over them, in it (The Cross).
  • 16
    (16) So then nothing, nobody, is to act as your judge in regard to food, drink, in sharing at a festival, a new moon or Shabbat day.
  • 17
    (17) Things which are a shadow of what is to come but the body belongs to The Mashiach.
  • 18
    (18) Let nobody keep condemning your rulership by delighting in false humility and worshipping messenger angels by going into details about what he’s seen and puffed up without purpose by his fleshly mind.
  • 19
    (19) And not holding fast to the head from whom the entire body is being supported in the dance and united by the joints and sinews grows with growth from יהוה YAHWEH.
  • 20
    (20) If you’ve died with Mashiach, away from the elementary principles of this world, why are you living as if in the world and submit to it’s dogmatic thinking?
  • 21
    (21) Don’t handle this, don’t taste, don’t touch!
  • 22
    (22) Which all are towards corrupting and consuming you according to commandments and instructions of men!
  • 23
    (23) This word becomes, as surely having wisdom but in would be religion, false humility and unsparing treatment of the body! And in value, nothing, to no one, against fleshly infilling indulgence.

  • 1
    For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and [for] them at Laodicea, and [for] as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
  • 2
    That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
  • 3
In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • 4
And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
  • 5
For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
  • 6
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him:
  • 7
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
  • 8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 9
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
  • 10
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
  • 11
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
  • 12
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
  • 13
    And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
  • 14
    Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
  • 15
[And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
  • 16
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]:
  • 17
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body [is] of Christ.
  • 18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
  • 19
And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
  • 20
Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
  • 21
    (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
  • 22
Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
  • 23
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
  • 1
For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
  • 2
that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and filled with the full riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ,
  • 3
in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • 4
I say this so that no one will deceive you by smooth rhetoric.
  • 5

For although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I delight to see your orderly condition and firm faith in Christ.

  • 6
Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him,
  • 7
rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
  • 8
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ.
  • 9
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form.
  • 10
And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
  • 11
In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of your sinful nature, with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands.
  • 12
And having been buried with Him in baptism, you were raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead.
  • 13
When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses,
  • 14
having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!
  • 15
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
  • 16
Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a feast, a New Moon, or a Sabbath.
  • 17
These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body that casts it belongs to Christ.
  • 18
Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. Such a person is puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind.
  • 19
He has lost connection to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and knit together by its joints and ligaments, grows as God causes it to grow.
  • 20
If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces of the world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its regulations:
  • 21
“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”?
  • 22
These will all perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.
  • 23
Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Colossians Chapter 2 Commentary

When Ancient Philosophy Meets the Cross

What’s Colossians 2 about?

Paul writes one of history’s most sophisticated takedowns of religious pretension and philosophical manipulation. He’s essentially saying: “You’ve got the real treasure—why are you settling for fool’s gold?”

The Full Context

Paul wrote Colossians around 60-62 AD from a Roman prison, addressing a church he’d never visited but deeply cared about. The Colossians were facing what scholars call the “Colossian heresy”—a seductive blend of Greek philosophy, Jewish mysticism, and early Gnostic ideas that promised deeper spiritual experiences through elaborate rules, angel worship, and secret knowledge. These false teachers weren’t completely abandoning Christ; they were just suggesting he wasn’t quite enough on his own.

This chapter sits at the heart of Paul’s letter, following his magnificent description of Christ’s supremacy in chapter 1. Here, Paul gets intensely practical about what Christ’s supremacy means for daily life. He’s not just defending doctrine—he’s fighting for the souls of people being told their simple faith in Jesus is somehow insufficient. The stakes couldn’t be higher: Will the Colossians embrace the fullness they already have in Christ, or will they chase after shadows and miss the substance standing right in front of them?

What the Ancient Words Tell Us

When Paul warns about being “taken captive through philosophy and empty deception” (Colossians 2:8), he uses the Greek word sylagōgeō—literally meaning “to carry off as booty” or “to kidnap.” This isn’t some gentle philosophical disagreement. Paul’s describing intellectual warfare, where false teachers are literally plundering souls through sophisticated arguments.

The phrase “according to human tradition” uses paradosis, the same word Jesus used when he criticized the Pharisees for elevating tradition above Scripture. Paul’s connecting the dots: the same religious game-playing that Jesus confronted is happening again, just with a Greek philosophical twist.

Grammar Geeks

When Paul says “in him dwells all the fullness of deity bodily” (Colossians 2:9), he uses plērōma—a technical term the false teachers were using to describe divine emanations. Paul essentially hijacks their vocabulary and says, “You want fullness? Here it is—not spread out among various spiritual beings, but concentrated entirely in Jesus.”

What Would the Original Audience Have Heard?

Picture the Colossians hearing this letter read aloud in their house church. They’re surrounded by neighbors who frequent the local mystery cults, attend philosophical lectures, and follow elaborate purification rituals. These false teachers aren’t obvious charlatans—they’re sophisticated, using impressive terminology and promising deeper spiritual experiences.

When Paul mentions “circumcision made without hands” (Colossians 2:11), Jewish Christians would immediately understand he’s talking about something far more radical than physical circumcision. He’s describing a spiritual surgery performed by God himself—the complete removal of the “body of flesh,” not just a piece of skin.

The image of being “buried with him in baptism” (Colossians 2:12) would have been visceral for his audience. Roman burial practices were elaborate affairs, but Paul’s describing something far more dramatic: a complete death to the old way of being, followed by resurrection power that makes you spiritually alive in ways the mystery religions could never deliver.

Did You Know?

The “certificate of debt” Paul mentions (Colossians 2:14) was a cheirographon—an actual legal document written in the debtor’s own handwriting, acknowledging what they owed. Roman law required these documents to be nailed to the cross alongside criminals, listing their crimes. Paul’s saying Jesus literally took our moral debt certificate and nailed it to his cross.

Wrestling with the Text

Here’s where things get fascinating and a bit puzzling. Paul spends Colossians 2:16-23 demolishing religious rule-keeping, then in chapter 3 he gives… more rules? What’s happening here?

The key is in what Paul calls “self-imposed religion” (Colossians 2:23). The Greek word ethelothrēskia literally means “voluntary worship”—religion you choose to add to what God has already provided. It’s the difference between responding to God’s love and trying to earn it.

The false teachers were essentially saying, “Faith in Christ is good, but if you really want to be spiritual, you need these additional practices.” Paul’s response is devastating: “You’re dead to those things. Why are you living like you’re still under their authority?” (Colossians 2:20)

Wait, That’s Strange…

Paul mentions “worship of angels” (Colossians 2:18) using a phrase that could mean either worshiping angels OR the worship that angels do. Some scholars think the false teachers claimed to participate in heavenly worship ceremonies alongside angels—a kind of first-century spiritual tourism that promised extraordinary religious experiences.

How This Changes Everything

Paul’s not just critiquing bad theology here—he’s completely reframing what spiritual maturity looks like. Instead of measuring spirituality by what you don’t do, how many rules you follow, or what mystical experiences you’ve had, Paul anchors everything in what’s already true about you in Christ.

The phrase “you have been filled in him” (Colossians 2:10) uses a perfect passive participle in Greek—meaning this fullness is a completed reality, not a goal you’re working toward. You’re not trying to become complete; you’re learning to live from the completeness you already possess.

When Paul talks about Christ “disarming the rulers and authorities” (Colossians 2:15), he uses language from Roman military triumphs. Victorious generals would parade their defeated enemies through the streets, stripping them of weapons and displaying their powerlessness. Paul’s saying this is exactly what Jesus did to the spiritual powers that held humanity captive—and he did it publicly, for all to see.

“The most dangerous spiritual deception isn’t obvious paganism—it’s adding just enough religious complexity to make simple faith in Christ seem insufficient.”

Key Takeaway

The most sophisticated spirituality in the world pales next to the simple reality that in Christ, you already have everything you need. Stop trying to add to what God has already completed.
