🔥 The Amazing Day of Pentecost

It was a very special day called Pentecostᵃ, and all of Jesus’ friends were together in a big room. They were waiting for something amazing that Jesus had promised them before He went back to heaven. Suddenly, something incredible happened! A sound like a powerful windstorm filled the whole house where they were sitting. It wasn’t just any wind – it was the sound of God’s power coming down from heaven! Then they saw something that looked like flames of fire, but these flames didn’t burn anyone. Instead, the flames gently touched each person in the room. This was God’s Holy Spirit coming to live inside them, just like Jesus had promised!
ᵃ Pentecost: This was like a big harvest party that Jewish people celebrated every year. People came from all over the world to Jerusalem to celebrate together, kind of like how your family might come together for Thanksgiving!

🌍 Speaking in Different Languages

When the Holy Spirit filled Jesus’ friends, something amazing happened – they started speaking in languages they had never learned before! But these weren’t just random sounds. They were praising God and telling everyone about the wonderful things He had done. Now, Jerusalem was full of visitors from many different countries who spoke different languagesᵇ. When these visitors heard the sound, they came running to see what was happening. And guess what? Each person heard Jesus’ friends speaking in their own language – the language they grew up speaking at home! The visitors were completely amazed! They said, “Wait a minute! Aren’t these people from Galilee? How can they speak our languages so perfectly? We hear them telling us about God’s amazing works in our own languages!” Some people were so amazed they didn’t know what to think. But others made fun of Jesus’ friends and said, “They must have drunk too much grape juice!”
ᵇ Different languages: Imagine if someone from Japan, Mexico, France, and Kenya all heard you speaking in their language perfectly, even though you only knew English. That’s how amazing this miracle was!

📢 Peter Explains What Happened

Then Peter, who was one of Jesus’ closest friends, stood up with the other eleven disciples. He spoke loudly so everyone could hear him: “Listen up, everyone! These people aren’t drunk – it’s only nine o’clock in the morning! What you’re seeing is something a prophet named Joel talked about a long time ago. He said that one day, God would pour out His Spirit on all kinds of people – young and old, boys and girls!” Peter told them about how God had promised that in the last days, He would do amazing miracles and give people special dreams and visions. And He said that everyone who asks Yahweh to save them would be saved!

✨ Peter Tells About Jesus

Then Peter started telling everyone about Jesus. He said, “You all knew Jesus from Nazareth. God proved that Jesus was special by doing amazing miracles through Him – miracles you saw with your own eyes! “But even though Jesus was perfect and never did anything wrong, some wicked people killed Him by nailing Him to a cross. However, this was actually part of God’s plan all along. “But here’s the most amazing part – God brought Jesus back to life! Death couldn’t keep Jesus down because He is God’s Son. We saw Him alive again with our own eyes!” Peter explained that long ago, King David had written a song about this. David knew that God had promised that one of his family members would become the greatest King ever. David was talking about Jesus!

👑 Jesus is the King!

Peter continued, “God raised Jesus from the dead and brought Him back to heaven. Now Jesus sits at God’s right hand as the King of everything! And from heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit down to us, which is what you’re seeing today. “So here’s what you need to know: This same Jesus that some of you helped kill is now both the King of everything and God’s chosen Messiah!”

💔 The People’s Hearts Changed

When the people heard this, their hearts felt really sad and worried. They realized they had made a terrible mistake. They asked Peter and the other disciples, “Oh no! What should we do?” Peter told them, “Turn back to God and be baptizedᶜ in Jesus’ name so your sins can be forgiven. Then you’ll receive the Holy Spirit as a gift! This promise is for you, your children, and people everywhere – everyone that Yahweh our God calls to Himself.” Peter kept talking and encouraging them, saying, “Save yourselves from this mixed-up world!”
ᶜ Baptized: This means being dipped underwater as a way to show everyone that you want to follow Jesus and that your old life is washed away, just like dirt gets washed off when you take a bath!

🎉 3,000 New Friends Join the Family!

The people loved what Peter said! About 3,000 people decided to follow Jesus that day and got baptized. What an amazing day that was!

🤝 The First Church Family

All these new believers became like one big, happy family. Here’s what they did together: They loved learning from the apostles about Jesus. They ate meals together and became best friends. They prayed together all the time. Everyone was amazed at all the incredible miracles the apostles were doing. But here’s something really special – they shared everything they had! If someone needed food, clothes, or a place to live, others would sell their things to help them. Nobody was selfish or greedy. Every day they met together at the temple to worship God. They also ate meals in each other’s homes, and they were always happy and thankful. They praised God, and everyone in the city liked them. And you know what? Every single day, more and more people decided to follow Jesus and join their family. Yahweh kept adding new friends to their group because He wanted to save as many people as possible!
What we can learn: Just like these first Christians shared and cared for each other, God wants us to be kind, generous, and loving to everyone around us. When we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we want to help others and tell them about Jesus too!
  • 1
¹When the day of Pentecost arrivedᵃ, all the believers were gathered together in one place.
  • 2
²Suddenly, a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the entire house where they were sitting.
  • 3
³Then they saw what appeared to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
  • 4
⁴All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to declare God’s wonders.
  • 5
⁵Now there were God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem for the festival.
  • 6
⁶When they heard this sound, a crowd came running, and they were bewildered because each one heard the believers speaking in their own native language.
  • 7
⁷Utterly amazed, they asked, “Aren’t all these people who are speaking Galileansᵇ?
  • 8
⁸How is it then that each of us hears them in our own native language?
  • 9
⁹Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
  • 10
¹⁰Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
  • 11
¹¹(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
  • 12
¹²Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
  • 13
¹³Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
  • 14
¹⁴Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
  • 15
¹⁵These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!
  • 16
¹⁶No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
  • 17
¹⁷In the last days, God says,
I will pour out My Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
  • 18
¹⁸Even on My servants, both men and women,
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
  • 19
¹⁹I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
  • 20
²⁰The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of Yahweh.
  • 21
²¹And everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh will be saved.
  • 22
²²”Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazarethᶜ was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know.
  • 23
²³This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross.
  • 24
²⁴But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.
  • 25
    ²⁵David said about Him:
I saw Yahweh always before Me.
Because He is at My right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
  • 26
    ²⁶Therefore My heart is glad and My tongue rejoices;
My body also will rest in hope,
  • 27
²⁷because You will not abandon Me to the realm of the dead,ᵈ
You will not let Your holy One see decay.
  • 28
    ²⁸You have made known to Me the paths of life;
You will fill Me with joy in Your presence.
  • 29
²⁹”Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
  • 30
³⁰But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne.
  • 31
³¹Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that He was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did His body see decay.
  • 32
³²God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.
  • 33
³³Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
  • 34
³⁴For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
    Yahweh said to my Lord:
    ‘Sit at My right hand
  • 35
    ³⁵until I make Your enemies
    a footstool for Your feet.’
  • 36
³⁶”Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
  • 37
³⁷When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
  • 38
³⁸Peter replied, “Return to Godᵉ and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • 39
³⁹The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom Yahweh our God will call.”
  • 40
⁴⁰With many other words he warned them and pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
  • 41
⁴¹Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.
  • 42
⁴²They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
  • 43
⁴³Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
  • 44
⁴⁴All the believers were together and had everything in common.
  • 45
⁴⁵They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
  • 46
⁴⁶Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
  • 47
⁴⁷praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And Yahweh added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Footnotes:

  • ¹ᵃ Pentecost: A Jewish harvest festival occurring 50 days after Passover, also called the Feast of Weeks. Jews from across the Roman Empire gathered in Jerusalem for this celebration.
  • ⁷ᵇ Galileans: People from Galilee, a northern region of Israel known for its distinct accent and considered by many Judeans to be less sophisticated and uneducated.
  • ²²ᶜ Jesus of Nazareth: Identifying Jesus by His hometown was common practice, though Nazareth was considered an insignificant village in Galilee.
  • ²⁷ᵈ Realm of the dead: Greek “Hades,” referring to the place of the dead in Jewish understanding, not necessarily a place of punishment but the dwelling place of departed spirits.
  • ³⁸ᵉ Return to God: The Greek word “metanoeo” means to change one’s mind or turn around, involving both a change of heart and direction in life.
  • 1
    (1) In the day of Pentecost (Shavu‘ot) being completed they were all together upon one place.
  • 2
    (2) Suddenly! Coming from the sky, a noise exactly like a violent carrying wind filled the entire house where they were sitting.
  • 3
    (3) There appeared to them tongues like fire being distributed and it sat upon each one of them.
  • 4
    (4) They were all filled with רוּחַ Ruach HaKodesh and began to speak with other tongues according to רוּחַ Ruach HaKodesh giving them declarations.
  • 5
    (5) Now there were Judeans living in Yerushalayim (Foundation of Peace), God-fearing men from every nation from under the sky.
  • 6
    (6) Now when this voice happened the multitude assembled were confused because each one heard them speak in their own dialect.
  • 7
    (7) Dumbfounded and wondering they said, “Look! Aren’t all these who are speaking, Galileans (Rolling Enclosed)?”
  • 8
    (8) How do we each hear in our own dialect in which we’re born?
  • 9
    (9) Parthians (A Pledge), Medes (My Measure), Elamites (Hidden Time); residents of Mesopotamia (Magnified), Y’hudah (Praise Yah), Cappadocia (Province of Good Horses), Pontus (Sea), Asia (Orient),
  • 10
    (10) Phrygia (Dry), Pamphylia (Of Every Tribe), Egypt (Black, Oppressors), the parts of Libya (Grazing, Weeping) near Cyrene (Supremacy of the Bridle); visitors from Rome (Strong), both Judeans (Praise Yah) and converts,
  • 11
    (11) Cretans (Fleshy) and Arabs (Fugitive), we hear them in our tongues, speaking of the greatness of The אֱלֹהִים Elohim!
  • 12
    (12) Now everybody continued being dumbfounded in great perplexity, saying to one another, “What is the will of this becoming?”
  • 13
    (13) But others scoffed, saying this, “They’re filled with fresh, sweetly new wine!”
  • 14
    (14) Now Kefa stood there with the 11, raising his voice and declared to them, “Men of Judea and all living in Yerushalayim, let this become known to you and really listen to my spoken-words.”
  • 15
    (15) Because these men aren’t drunk like you assume for its the day’s third hour (9AM)!
  • 16
    (16) Rather this is that spoken through the prophet Yo’el (Yah is God),
  • 17
    (17) IT WILL BE IN THE LAST DAYS, יהוה YAHWEH says, I WILL POUR OUT FROM MY RUACH-SPIRIT UPON ALL FLESH, AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUTHS WILL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR ELDERS WILL DREAM, DREAMS,
  • 18

    (18) EVEN UPON BOTH MY MALE AND FEMALE LOVE-SLAVES,

I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR OUT FROM MY SPIRIT,

    AND THEY WILL PROPHECY,

  • 19
    (19) I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE, SIGNS UPON THE LAND BELOW, BLOOD, FIRE AND SMOKY VAPOUR.
  • 20
    (20) THE SUN WILL BE CHANGED INTO DARKNESS, THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND SPLENDIDLY-GLORIOUS DAY OF יהוה YAHWEH ARRIVES.
  • 21
IT WILL COME TO PASS THAT EVERYBODY WHO CALLS UPON THE NAME OF יהוה YAHWEH WILL BE SAVED!
  • 22
    (22) Men of Israel (God Will Rule), listen to these words. Yeshua (Yah’s Salvation) from Natzeret, (The Branch) a man exhibited to you from The אֱלֹהִים Elohim with miraculous-power, wonders and attesting-signs that The אֱלֹהִים Elohim did through Him in your middle, just as you know.
  • 23
    (23) This One, given up by the appointed purpose and foreknowledge of The אֱלֹהִים Elohim, you nailed to a wooden-cross through the hands of Torah-less (lawless) pagans to put to death!
  • 24
    (24) The אֱלֹהִים Elohim raised Him up and released the birth pains of death, because it was powerless for Him to be imprisoned by it!
  • 25
    (25) Because David (Beloved), says towards Him, ‘I FORESEE YAHWEH ALWAYS BEFORE ME,   FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT-HAND SO THAT I WON’T BE SHAKEN,
  • 26
    (26) THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXALTED, YET STILL, MY FLESH WILL LIVE UPON HOPE,
  • 27
    (27) BECAUSE YOU WON’T ABANDON MY LIFE INTO SHEOL-HADES, NOR GIVE YOUR SET-APART HOLY ONE TO SEE THE PIT’S CORRUPTION,
  • 28
    (28) YOU’VE REVEALED TO ME THE WAYS OF ZOE-LIFE, YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR FACE!’
  • 29
    (29) Men! Brothers! I’m permitted to confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried. His tomb is in us (the city) to this day!
  • 30
    (30) So then, being a prophet and knowing that ‘THE אֱלֹהִים ELOHIM PROMISED HIM WITH A VOW, TO SEAT FROM HIS FRUIT OF THE LOINS, UPON HIS THRONE!’
  • 31
    (31) He foresaw, speaking about the resurrection of The Mashiach because HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED INTO SHEOL-HADES, NOR HIS FLESH SEEING CORRUPTION.
  • 32
    (32) This Yeshua, The אֱלֹהִים Elohim raised up of whom we’re all witnesses!
  • 33
    (33) Therefore, having been exalted to the right-hand of The אֱלֹהִים Elohim, both having received from The Abba-Father the promise of רוּחַ Ruach HaKodesh, He pours out, this which you see and hear.
  • 34
    (34) Because it wasn’t David ascending into the sky, but he says, ‘יהוה YAHWEH SAID TO MY ADONAI, SIT AT MY RIGHT-HAND,
  • 35
    (35) UNTIL I PLACE YOUR ENEMIES AS A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET!’
  • 36
    (36) Therefore, let all the house of Israel securely know that The אֱלֹהִים Elohim has made Him both אָדוֹן Adonai and Mashiach, this Yeshua whom you crucified.
  • 37
    (37) Now hearing, stabbed to the heart, they both said to Kefa and the rest of the emissaries, ‘Men! Brothers! What do we do?’
  • 38
    (38) Kefa now said to them, “Return-repentant and each of you be immersed in the name of Yeshua Mashiach into forgiveness of your deviating-sins and you’ll receive the gift of רוּחַ Ruach HaKodesh.
  • 39
    (39) Because the promise becomes for you, your children and for everybody far, far away, whosoever אָדוֹן Adonai our אֱלֹהִים Elohim will call to Himself.”
  • 40
    (40) He both warningly testified and urged with many other words, saying to them, “Be saved from this crookedly-unjust generation!”
  • 41
    (41) So indeed, therefore, those who received his word were immersed, in that one day, about 3,000 lives were added!
  • 42
    (42) Now they powerfully devoted themselves to the emissaries teaching, to fellowship, to breaking bread and the prayers.
  • 43
    (43) Now fear was happening to every life and many wonderful-marvels and miraculous-signs happened through the emissaries.
  • 44
    (44) Everybody of those believing together had everything in common,
  • 45
    (45) selling property and possessions, they distributed to all, because of anyone, maybe having a need.
  • 46
    (46) Day by day, both powerfully devoted with one mind in the Palatial-Temple and by house breaking bread, they had a share of food in jubilant-joy and simplicity of heart.
  • 47
    (47) Praising The אֱלֹהִים Elohim-God and having favourable-grace with all people. Now daily, The אָדוֹן Adonai-Lord added upon them, the ones being saved.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
  • 2
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
  • 3
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
  • 4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
  • 5
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
  • 6
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
  • 7
And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
  • 8
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
  • 9
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
  • 10
Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
  • 11
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
  • 12
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
  • 13
Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
  • 14
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all [ye] that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
  • 15
For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is [but] the third hour of the day.
  • 16
    But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
  • 17
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
  • 18
And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
  • 19
And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
  • 20
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
  • 21
And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  • 22
Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
  • 23
Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
  • 24
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
  • 25
For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
  • 26
Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
  • 27
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
  • 28
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
  • 29
Men [and] brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
  • 30
    Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
  • 31
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
  • 32
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
  • 33
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
  • 34
For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
  • 35
Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
  • 36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
  • 37
Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?
  • 38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • 39
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.
  • 40
And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
  • 41
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added [unto them] about three thousand souls.
  • 42
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
  • 43
And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
  • 44
    And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
  • 45
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all [men], as every man had need.
  • 46
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
  • 47
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
  • 1
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
  • 2
Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
  • 3
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
  • 4

  • 5
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
  • 6
And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language.
  • 7
Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
  • 8
How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language?
  • 9
Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
  • 10
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome,
  • 11
both Jews and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
  • 12
Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
  • 13
But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!”
  • 14
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words.
  • 15
These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only the third hour of the day!
  • 16
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
  • 17
‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
  • 18

Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

  • 19
I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
  • 20
The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord.
  • 21
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
  • 22
Men of Israel, listen to this message: Jesus of Nazareth was a man certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know.
  • 23
He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge, and you, by the hands of the lawless, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross.
  • 24
But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches.
  • 25
David says about Him: ‘I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
  • 26
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope,
  • 27
because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.
  • 28
You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’
  • 29
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
  • 30
But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne.
  • 31
Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.
  • 32
God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.
  • 33
Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
  • 34
For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand
  • 35
until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’
  • 36
Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!”
  • 37
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
  • 38
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • 39
This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
  • 40
With many other words he testified, and he urged them, “Be saved from this corrupt generation.”
  • 41
Those who embraced his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to the believers that day.
  • 42
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
  • 43
A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.
  • 44
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
  • 45
Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need.
  • 46
With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,
  • 47
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Acts Chapter 2 Commentary

The Day Everything Changed: When Heaven Crashed Into Jerusalem

What’s Acts 2 about?

This is the story of the most explosive birthday party in history – the birth of the Church. Picture this: 120 terrified disciples hiding in an upper room suddenly become fearless preachers speaking languages they never learned, and 3,000 people get baptized before lunch. It’s Pentecost, and the Holy Spirit just rewrote the rules of human connection forever.

The Full Context

Fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead and ten days after He ascended to heaven, Jerusalem was packed with Jewish pilgrims from across the Roman Empire celebrating Pentecost – the Feast of Weeks. What started as a harvest festival was about to become something completely different. The disciples were still processing everything that had happened: their Rabbi had died, come back to life, spent forty days with them, then disappeared into the clouds with a promise that they’d receive power “from on high.”

Luke, the physician-turned-historian, is documenting how a small group of Jewish followers of Jesus exploded into a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual movement that would eventually flip the Roman Empire upside down. Acts 2 serves as the hinge point of human history – the moment when God’s Spirit, once limited to prophets and kings, became available to anyone who would receive it. This chapter doesn’t just describe an event; it establishes the DNA of what it means to be the Church, complete with supernatural gifts, radical generosity, and a message so compelling that religious authorities couldn’t stop it.

What the Ancient Words Tell Us

When Luke writes that the Spirit came like ruach (wind) and pyr (fire), he’s not being poetic – he’s being precise. In Hebrew thought, ruach is the same word for breath, wind, and spirit. It’s the breath of God that brought Adam to life, the wind that parted the Red Sea, and now the Spirit that transforms terrified disciples into bold witnesses.

Grammar Geeks

The word glōssais (tongues) in Acts 2:4 is fascinating – it can mean physical tongues, languages, or even flames shaped like tongues. Luke uses it for all three: the flames that appeared, the physical organs of speech, and the actual languages being spoken. It’s a brilliant triple wordplay that ties the whole miracle together.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: the languages weren’t random. Luke lists sixteen different regions and peoples who heard the gospel in their native tongues. This isn’t just showing off – it’s reversing Babel. Where human pride once scattered the nations and confused their languages (Genesis 11:1-9), God’s Spirit now reunites them through the message of Jesus.

The word katalambano that Luke uses for “understand” in Acts 2:8 literally means “to seize” or “grasp firmly.” These pilgrims weren’t just hearing sounds – they were grasping the meaning with the same certainty they’d grab a rope thrown to a drowning man.

What Would the Original Audience Have Heard?

Imagine you’re a Jewish pilgrim who’s traveled hundreds of miles to Jerusalem for Pentecost. You’re probably staying in overcrowded housing, navigating festival crowds, and looking forward to celebrating God’s gift of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Then suddenly, you hear Galileans – people you consider backwards yokels – speaking in your childhood dialect about “the mighty works of God.”

Did You Know?

Pentecost occurred exactly 50 days after Passover, which means it fell on the same day Moses received the Torah at Sinai according to Jewish tradition. The early Christians would have seen this timing as God’s perfect orchestration – the Law was given in one language to one nation, but the Gospel was given in many languages to all nations.

To a first-century Jew, this would have been mind-blowing for several reasons. First, Galilee was the backwater province where people spoke with such thick accents that Peter got busted in a courtyard just by opening his mouth. Second, the idea that the Shekhinah (God’s presence) would rest on ordinary people – not just priests or prophets – was revolutionary.

But when Peter stood up and quoted Joel 2:28-32, connecting recent events to ancient prophecy, something clicked. This wasn’t random chaos – this was God keeping a promise made centuries earlier: “I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.”

Wrestling with the Text

Here’s where things get uncomfortable for our modern sensibilities. Peter’s sermon in Acts 2:14-36 doesn’t sound like anything you’d hear in today’s seeker-sensitive services. He essentially tells his audience: “You killed the Messiah, but God raised Him up, and now you need to repent or face judgment.”

Wait, That’s Strange…

Why would 3,000 people respond positively to being told they’re murderers? The answer lies in the supernatural conviction of the Holy Spirit. This wasn’t just compelling rhetoric – it was divine revelation piercing human hearts. The same Spirit enabling languages also enabled recognition of truth.

But notice what Peter offers: not just forgiveness, but the gift of the Holy Spirit himself (Acts 2:38). This is unprecedented in Jewish thought. The Spirit was God’s special empowerment for judges, kings, and prophets – not for ordinary people. Yet here’s Peter saying, “This is available to you, your children, and anyone else God calls.”

The phrase “cut to the heart” in Acts 2:37 uses katanysso, which literally means “to pierce through” – the same word used for a sword thrust. This wasn’t gentle conviction; this was surgical precision.

How This Changes Everything

The community described in Acts 2:42-47 wasn’t just a nice social club. Luke gives us four pillars that defined this new movement: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship (koinōnia), breaking bread, and prayers. But koinōnia doesn’t just mean hanging out – it means sharing life so deeply that “no one claimed that any of their possessions was their own.”

“The Holy Spirit didn’t just change what the disciples believed – He changed how they lived, turning a group of individuals into a family that shared everything because they had received everything.”

This radical generosity wasn’t socialism or communism – it was the natural overflow of people who had been transformed by the Spirit. When you truly grasp that everything belongs to God and He’s freely given you eternal life, holding tightly to temporary possessions starts to feel silly.

The daily temple attendance (Acts 2:46) shows they weren’t abandoning their Jewish identity – they were fulfilling it. They saw Jesus as the completion of everything the temple, sacrifices, and festivals had been pointing toward all along.

Key Takeaway

Pentecost wasn’t just about speaking in tongues – it was about God creating a new kind of human community where the Spirit of God would live not in a building made with hands, but in the hearts of ordinary people who would become extraordinary through His power.
